View Full Version : Marijuana Addiction
I am addicted. I live my life thinking about it, nearly everything I do, I do that because thats going to help me get more bud, or this is how I will be able to get some. I need to quit. I have been smoking constantly since about March 2002. Basically non stop, everyday smoking. The longest break I have taken was about 10 days, and thats was about 9 months ago. The longest break I have taken in the last 9 months was 3 days. I need to feel high. If im not high, im bored, down, and just basically pissed. The smoking is starting to take effect on my body, and I am definatleynoticing.I went to the doctors recently because I have been having a bad cought, bad sinus, headaches, and chest pains. The doctor thought I could have whooping cough.Yet, I think I know what is is now.Chronic broncitis. That is what I came up with after doing a search on Marijuana addiction. I need to stop for my own good for a while, smoking everyday, many times, it is definatley not good for me, or my lungs.I can deal with not smoking, the problem is I feel like complete shit when im not high. I need to know some things that will help me coupe with it, dont get me wrong, im sure I will still blaze up, but I just want to cut down, I really can not keep on going and be this dependent for something. What will help me not be "high", is there some kind of pill that can put me in a better set of mind, just something that will help me coupe with being sober. Any help will help. Thanks
Pills? hmm maybe codeine would help you out alot. It itself can be addictive but, If you use it right it could eaze you off the chronic whithout getting you hooked on it. But of course its alot harder to get ahold of than bud. (this is just my idea, soem people could think its a bad idea, I know it'd work for me I always can kick a drug with another.)
Other than that pick up some hobbies I used to smoke every dam day until I had to quit cold turkey. I guess its easier for me because I CANT do it its not even an option. I keep myself busy by picking video games back up something I didn't need when I had chronic. Now I keep myself busy with video games, dxm, dmt, and occasionally wild dagga. I can't get any codeine.

that's rough man, i wish you all the best.
as for a "pill' maybe a benzo or something, there really isn't anything known to help with marijuana "addiction". as for the codiene, it is a very good anti-cough medicine, wide spread until DXM came along. i would also recommend codeine, be sure to regulate your use of that as well.
Yea, I am able to get my hands on some Lortab,Valium(sometimes), Xanax (sometimes), Somas (sometimes), Flexeril, and Vicodin(sometimes). Also, when I do Coke, it seems to help me feel happier. Yet, I dont want to become a everyday pill popper or a coke head. I dont know,I think Ijust need something to change my mood and make me, well.. me.
I think you don't really need any other drugs to ease the pain. It may help but why get off one thing and risk the chance of getting addicted to something else.
I think it's either best to stop completely or not stop at all.
But if you can't cold turkey (I doubt even I could) then I would also reccomend some codiene.
Try getting into a hobby or something, like taking walks in the woods (if you have woods nearby) and just sit down and relax. Maybe write or draw.
It's really only a matter of trying to find something that takes your mind off smoking. After a while it will be easier, but it will be tough for tbe first while.
Yes and I might be kind of wierd but when I get drug cravings like marijuana, Since I can't smoke it I enjoy reading about it on erowid or here. (yea im wierd like that, I could read about drugs for days) Makes me feel better. Reading up on different kinds of drugs is great, isn't that why we are all here. But I guess it could have the opposite effect for some people and just make them want it more. For me one of the two is good enough either researching it or doing it.
My sentiments exactly Robo. Damn piss tests......2 more months and I'm fucking done you bastards!!!!!
I enjoy reading too since I can't do my fave. Sometimes it gets me craving, but I still enjoy it.
I've been addcited for years to that stuff... haven't quit one day for years. I know the idea of quitting from now on for ever is fucked up and seems impossible. I've stopped smoking it since about4 weeks now.
Here's my advise: Get yourself to smoke in weekends only. You should be able to do that. keep it up for 2 or 3 weeks. You must have noticed by then that once you've quit for 5 days you don't need the stuff that bad anymore. then you stop completely. i know smoking in weekends is not too bad for you. But if you don't quit at all for a few months everytime you've smoked in the weekend the rest of the week you again have the need to smoke.
Don't use any other stuff to kick your habbit. Just get some kind of thee that makes you able to sleep easier. You'll probably stay awake when trying to sleep until 5 a.m. or so which will piss you off. Be sure not to have weed then, cause you'll probably smoke it.
good luck.
with me reading about drugs only makes it worse. I get the feeling see, it's not that bad. Everybody does it! Using valium, codeine or any of that stuff will get you hooked to stuff much worse then weed. Just get a fuckin' grip on yourself dude! Its just marihuana! think of it like that.
One more thing. Dothings at night. Don't get bored. Sports is a good thing. being active increases(spelling?) your endorphine level. It makes you feel happier and stuff.
Well, in my opinion, it's better to be addicted to Marijuana than to "pills", even if any addiction is not good.
try getting a good vaprouizer that well help you and its much healthier way of inhaling the herbs, try getting as much exersice u can and you can this will really help, dont take my word for it go gohttp://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif
how would a vaporizer help kick your addiction?
and
Well, in my opinion, it's better to be addicted to Marijuana than to "pills"
thats what i was saying, but we're talking about getting rid of the MJ add.
cause its used for medical reason.vp supposed to have much lower carbon monoxide&tar levels than normal smoking, virtually none in a good vapourizer.so thiswill help someone who is adicted to the smoking method mj to gradulally stop smoking allthoghter, and try and just used the vp and then give that up once they start to feel stronger and better. because thier not abuseing their herb their putting it to good use, thats my opion anyway. cause it can get quite tough for someppl to just stop doing unhealthyhabitsthey pick up for no good reason.this is just seems like something you could try anyway cause there isnt really any know way to help someone who is addicted you have to just stop alltogehter, and use pills if you really have too
For a marihuana addiction you don't need pills in my opinion. It's just stupid. and the main reason I've quit is because i got the feeling I was getting dumb. No concentration, short term memory totally wrecked and stuff like that. With a vp you still get stoned, so would only be better for your lungs. You should get rid of the thc and stuff in your body. You're abusing the herb just as bad with a vp. as you do when smoking the 'normal' way.
Well I never been addicted to a substance persay in my life. I am addicted to being high, I love to get high, and being high from anything is good enough for me. I love to smoke MJ daily if I could , but as long as im getting high im ok. Thats why I always switch up the drug im doing. I never stick to one drug because that bores me. Even addictive drugs never get me addicted I did coke for a few months got bored did meth a few months got bored, went back to dxm to get high, and got to high of a tolerance, tried dmt a while couldn't break through, went to wild dagga until it quit getting me high, now im looking for my next substance. So for me quiting MJ with pills isn't a stupid idea, I don't want to quit getting high I want to quit doing MJ, so I don't fail my tests. As for colby he said he is looking for a pill or something that will help him quit MJ so I don't think he wants to never get high again. I wish I could get a prescription to ambien then I'd be happy as happy could be. Life would be good.
I've been slowing my roll on smoking latley, since that last post, I took 4 days off of smoking. Today, I blazed though, haha. Much better high by the way im lit. I notice that it helped me clear up in my chest, i feel better, im not gonna quit all at once just lil by lil you know start slow build up
well, I live in the Netherlands, so smoking weed is the easiest thing. I don't want to quit smoking it for the rest of my life, but I'm just quitting my drugABuse. That's why Iquitat all for about 3 months. I still do other things in weekends, but it shouldn't be a need to get high. After this period I will be smoking again, but only inweekends. In my opinion doing drugs should be fun and special. Not an everyday thing.

I used to be heavy into drugs and I smoked the herb everyday for about 3 years. Eventually I realized I needed to change and obviously I needed to cut down on smokin and stop using harder substances. What I did was stuck to smokin like 3 times a month on the weekends and took unisoms to help with the insomnia. The worst withdraw effect was the insomnia and that was about it. The unisoms were effective only half the time but they did help. If I felt really bad though I would use some krotam which really took the edge off. Using other drugs so take the edge off is rarly a good idea, especially hard drugs.
Same for me, I just started to have that cold sweat as well. Especially when i woke up I sometimes was completely soaked in it, Yahk! http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif
Yea I quit for a few months and gave in to some peer pressure on christmas eve, as well on christmas, and smoked a few blunts on those two days. But hey it was christmas! I am someone who used to barely get high off weed, after I quit man that stuff got me so blazed, I loved it, anyways hopefully I can get it out of my system before my next test. I can't believe I haven't had a UA yet, they called me in twice since christmas but gave me a breathalizer test only! Lucky me. Im off the cannabis again for good this time, until im through with all my legal sh*t. I may get a UA tommorrow but I think I can dialute it, if I fail though it will be back to jail, they made it quite clear if I screw up it'll be straight back in there, no matter how small. (besides traffic tickets.) Maybe not sicne it was on the holidays? but I doubt that lol! I'll add bleach if I have too =P

ive got one month of drug tests left. all i can say is it really does get better after a week or so, but somethings just dont always go back to normal. since i stopped smoking weed i only have to sleep every other day (like clockwork, not just being restless, its just how my body funtions now) i dont know what it is, tonight is my third night up straight i dont feel tired at all. i was an everyday smoker for almost two years before i had to quit (and by the way, being forced to quit makes it a lot easier than doing it on your own) and i gotta say my body/personality has gone through some crazy changes since quitting. i eat one meal a day, which made me lose 15 pounds in a couple days, and i cant stop reading, its crazy... all i can really say is it is worth taking a break, you get a real sense of accomplishment outta it and it psyches u up for the next time u get to smoke cuz man u know ur gonna be higher than uve been in a long as time
Yeah, I recognize the sleeping problem, I used to not be able to sleep unless I smoked, but now I can't sleep when I'm smoking. Haven't smoked in 3 days, and last night I only had to stay in bed for 2 hours before I was asleep, the night before it took me 8 frustrating hours.
As for using codeine and valium to kick a cannabis habit, it's just too fucking stupid, like using heroin to treat opium addiction. Codeine and valium make you physicaly addicted and is bad for your body. If you want to quit a habit(I'm not talking about physical addiction) it would do you no good to do other drugs while you're supposed to be quitting. That's not what quiting is about, it seems to me that some people want to quit without being bothered by the boredom and depression that follows, but you can't have one without the other. It's not my intention to diss any of you, but if you can't manage to quit cannabis without getting high on something you probably should stick to cannabis. It's better for you than the other things you might develop an affinity for.
Oh, by the way, I have exactly the same problem, so don't think I'm unsympathetic.
Good luck, whatever you decide onhttp://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
quiting mj is not fun. sometimes i will take a xanax to take some of the desire to, but trying codeineto quit i think is a bad idea, i know from experience it just brought me up the chain of opiates, and left me with a bigger addiction. you probably just want to work out. it will take your mind off drugs
if your going to quit for good then you need to seriously think about how your going torid yourself of all drugs for good.any places or ppl who will draw you back to it is not really going to help unless your honest.its going to behard, but i think its the only way for some ppl to give up their personal addiction
If I have a job, I have no problem sleeping if I'm without cannabis. The trick is to keep oneself occupied, working out can be a good idea, but this turns into an addiction too(one less frowned upon though) since the body produces a lot of endorfines while working out. But still, a really good idea if you want to get high without doing drugs, I've found that yoga is very good too, clears the mind and gives nice endorfine rushes.
Melatonin can also be taken 1/2 hour prior to sleeping, it doesn't make you stoned or anything, but helps you sleep.

There was a point when the only drug i did was bud. I wouldn't say that
i was addicted but i was sort of stuck in a rut. In the end the simple
act of taking one E sorted me out and diverted my interest in cannabis.
Obviously this is not for everyone because many people (a lot of heavy
marijuana users in my experience) have certain qualms about the use of
A class (Schedule 1) drugs.
Its worth it though.
ps (unless you have an allergy to MDMA, then it definately isn't)
Come on you guys! MJ is the drug most of you would recoment to
quit a drug like codine/valium/etc. it is one of the least
harmfull, expensive and easier to quit. So dont start taking
something worse! Just promise your self you will never get into
anything else then work on cutting out the MJ.
I think the best advice here is from Gijs_b </span>to
cut out weekdays. If that is too hard try only afternoons then
only evenings. I have found the only weekends is nice. I
have discovered I can only enjoy MJ for about 3 days in a row then it
sucks. I can get really blasted on friday night but on sunday I
start thinking something is wrong with my weed. Think of it as
trying to maximize your enjoyment of MJ. Kind of like the rule of
not stroking off the day before a bootycall.</span></span>
Ok, after discurageing other drugs....
How about ibogain? It is rumored to be a treatment for H & C
addiction. There are stories of one time use "cureing" addicts
for years. This sounds too good to be true, but, at least I dont
think the stuff is addictive itself. In fact it does not really
sound all that fun, but hey, neither is the alternitive.
I think Ibogaine might be a little bit overkill to kick a cannabis habit, the trip is supposed to be quite long and give you access to a lot of subconscious material. It would probably be necessary to have some witch-doctor or therapist to help you interpret all the visions you have.
Drugs like codine/valium/etc are only worse if you make them worse, the key is not to be an idiot, and use moderation. However I agree jsut cut down on the MJ usage if you can without doing anything else. I personally use other drugs to help kick the habit and it works great for me, and I am not addicted to any of the drugs im kicking it with. Whats right for one may not be right for some and vise versa.

I too am addicted to pot. I have been smoking for over 15 years and I have kicked everything else at one point in time, except pot.
2 years ago I was drinking a 12 pk a day, now, I do about 6 beer's a night with a plump joint and few xanax .25mg tabs.
I was able to quit my pack a day habbit with the cigs over a year ago, and to this day I still get the urge to smoke when I hear it being mentioned in a song or on TV..
Addictions suck, but if you feel like your strong enough mentally, you will overcome almost any addiction.

Just glanced over this thread, saw "physical addiction" being mentioned a couple of times.. Which was my reason for responding; Cannabis IS physically addictive, albeit to a much lesser degree as other drugs such as opiates or cigarettes, the physical withdrawal syndrome when Cannabis use is stopped is very real (e.g. restlessness, irritability, mild agitation, insomnia, sleep EEG disturbance, nausea, cramping, etc.), it's also only true in a small percentage of users.
I agree with blowmonkey (nice handle BTW - sort of). Stress
hormones (exactly which I do not remember (cortisol?) are released to a
small extent upon THC withdraw. However, this is nothing compared
to the withdrawl seen by heroine and alcoholics where outright
coldturkey can be fatal. So count yourself lucky and dont get
hoked on something worse trying to cure yourself of MJ.
Well, things have gotten a ton better since the last posts. I still stick to mary jane though, just less, and have not beendoing any other hard stuff.I have been taking breaks every week, they range from about 2-5 days. I must say, I love smoking :). My highs are much better since I have cut down. I did not decided to transfer over to pills, just decided to deal with it, stick it out, be depressed i guess. then I thought to myself what the hell, there is no way I can be depressed, I am always happy, why am I trippin so much. I think I was just so incredibly stressed at the time just things were becoming way to overwhelming. The first couple weeks when I started to quit smoking were tough, I was still a lil down, and depressed, but everything was on the up-rise, and my attitude and mood were becoming much better. Now, I am no longer down. I feel great, taking breaks from weed, and not blazing everyday has just helped a lot, the only thing that has been sucking is sleep. I find it much, much, much harder to fall asleep. I have been taking benadryl to help me sleep on some nights, yet am looking for something that will help out better than that, any suggestions?
Well for insomnia there is the usually wisdom:
- no coffee (or tea) for 6 hours before bed
- dont read or watch tv in bed (so that you learn to sleep when in bed - habit)
- only try for 15 min then get up and go read or something in a differnt room/area
- get more excercise and daylight durring the day
- a drink may help but this may be more of a problem then the mj
- you could also try melatonin 1 hour before regular bedtime (i find it induces a rather natural "gee it must be bedtime")
But I am sure you have heard most of this before from your mom.
Also, ever though you were bipolar or suffered from depression?
Go to a doctor. Maybe you just need some prozak or something.

so far ive been smoking for about 7 months, every other day basically, i can deff feel some irritation and fatigue on my off days , yet i still believe that weed is only psychologically addictive
weed is only psychologically addictive... Period.. If you want to quit find contructive things to do with your time and don't hang around people who smoke.
Just because it is psychologically addictive doesn't mean that your body won't feel it, mind and body are very intimate, just consider how physiological pain affects the psyche. Psychological pain might also cause physical symptoms.

dont get nausea, get real antsy thou, ready to bitch at anything. And eating is a pain because i'll be real hungry and as soon as i take a bite its like i'm forcing it down my thought like its paper. like i'm full even though a moment ago i was hungry. Its like theres something missing(me being high). i also get stiff and a little bit tense in my back and legs. the only problem i really hate (during those times i stopped smoking) was just missing it. Watching tv didnt feel right,(something was missing). books, net, all that shit felt boring, lacking something.
Yeah, going without does feel like something is missing-that's a neat way to put it.

man i love weed.
I can't believe no one mentioned the most obvious AND most beneficial answer....see a psychiatrist about your depression, and make sure to tell them about the weed, and they can perscribe you something that will help and not get you addicted.

I have the answer to quit pot. Read on Ego Death and try to experiance it when your high. It will change the character of your highs for good.
Dont take codien or anything, it makes you feel good and it feels even better when you smoke weed with it. Take a supplement called DMAE every morning. Take 3X the amount suggested eah morning. Ive seen it cure chronit tobacco smokers as well as drug abusers. It is listed as an ADD med in other countries, and it has been used in the doctors office all over the world for combatting mental addictions

Just try to limit yourself, if u blaze then wait a while it'l be more fun. When it stops being fun, paranoia takes over or it's getting in the way of tasks thats the time to stop and think.

Hey...
As so many other people above have said, don't use other drugs (legal or not)as a substitute when you're in this frame of mind, you are more vulnerable at the moment and so far more likely to become addicted.
Like Toria said...you need to seek some medical advice. Go to a psychiatrist, they will be able to help you, and they won't judge you just because of your habit.
Also try and surround yourself with people who don't smoke. I know thats probably easier said than done, but if you have to be away from your friends fora while, its worth it if it helps.
Well good luck anyways and letus know how u get along.... x
Another thing to try is to do something good every time you blaze. I vowed to do a few sets of situps and pushups. A friend of mine decided to work on his house when ever he lit up. He now has a nicely fixed up house (with some interesting fuckups).

http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif Justa quick observance, firstly, study the type of addiction that troubles you it is psychological only.. there is no physical addiction here and the apparent void that you are trying to fill is I suspect only,an adolescant.
once there was a time {long ago} when I felt that I needed help with a similar thing and I went to the help experts{as they claimed in the yellow pages} They were no help and I suspect that you are experiencing more than you have included in youre post it is very tough these days, and most people as a general rule are very mean and selfish.
Consider thinking beyond just this month, year, or decade consider the big picture.... CHANCES are that youre intelligence have brought you to this quandry........Best wishes

I smoke almost as much as you do and have been for almost two years now, but I will tell you honestly now that there is more of a reason than just loving Ganja. Being high is nice, but doing it to the point where you NEED bud is horrible. If you were to just wean off of weed withlight use of abenzo or just by yourself the highs even though they would be farther apart would be much more enjoyable. I would highly suggestsimply seeing a psychiatrist, he can give you the best advice, and the best pills if you choose to go that route.
No body has mentioned that there are cannabinoid receptors in the brain. I find this intriguing as somewhere over our evoulutionary history, the brain adapted to need the substance. It has been shown time and time again to reduce vomiting and nausea. So it follows that withdrawal from MJ will induce nausea. As we all know withdrawal effects of any drug are the excact opposite of the effects experienced when using. Anyway, Colby the advise of cutting down is the best and you seem to be doing really well.

Marijuana and hashish are NOT physically addictive, not does 'withdrawal' cause nausea.
Andrew Weil has called smoking marijuana a 'stubborn and unproductive habit'
which may be true, but the addcition is only psychological. The easiest
way to stop smoking is to completely change your situation (ie, move).

im addicted to weed too. i've never sucked dick for weed
like in half baked. but my life revolves around it more
