Hi folk,

It's pretty hard to define this "concept", so I would know what do you mean when you use this term.

Thank you in advance guys !

In psychology it refers to one of the 3 parts of the psyche according to Freud. The ego, id, and the super-ego. Basically the id is the primal part of the brain. The part that just wants pleasure (drugs, sex, etc). The super-ego is the perfectionist in all of us. The part wanting to fit in with societal aims and requirements. The ego is the part that mediates between the two. Decides to clean house today and take a couple hits of E tomorrow.

But in normal conversation Ego usually means something like this from onelook dictionary...

"noun: an inflated feeling of pride in your superiority to others "

Lack of the super-ego is the hallmark of a psychopath. No feeling of guilt. Beating the crap out of someone for giggles is one of the indicators that one lacks the ability of seeing right from wrong. Feeling this might be amusing, on occasion, comes from the id. What is left is your day-to-day mind: The Ego.

Of course this is a very simple explanation. For a better overview, I suggest reading "Man And His Symbols" by Carl G. Jung some nights as you smoke your Holy Toad and feel safe and free. Your eyes will pop out and you will have amazing dreams.

Terence McKenna's interview published on deoxy.org :

M2: What do you mean by the term ego?

TM: I'm assuming a Jungian vocabulary. The ego is not the self. The ego is a nexus of strategies for short-term gain at the expense of group values and even long-term personal gain.

the ego is that part of yourself that understands reality through mind constructs ... so EVERYTHING you think or believe with your head - is ego.

all thoughts are ego ... yep - ALL of them.

what i write down here - is my ego. your question - is your ego ... this forum - is all about ego's ...

it's the identification of reality through the thinking mind.

when the ego is gone - there are no questions - when there is no ego - their is no need to give answers- when there is no ego - everything is good as it's presented in the presented or present moment... btw - a present is also a gift - to see this moment now - as it is - is a gift of the universe ... to change or adapt it ... is the ego trying to put his will on reality.

Basically, the ego in Freudian terms is the part of the conscious which comprehends reality. ex: Keeps you from believing you can fly.

maybe ''conscensus reality'' would be better to say ... but i don't know what freud called it.

that's the problem with the ego ... it's evolved arround reality - but only the reality that IT believes to be true ... so it believes somethin - and makes that believe system reality nr 1 ...

like your given name = you ... that's true - and also not ... on a diffrent plane of existence.

or when you ask Don Juan - can you fly? - he might say yes ... in an other mindstate offcourse.
