What exactly classifies a drug as an “Other Drug”? Well, actually, this is a convention being adopted simply to facilitate the organization of drugs into categories for these info pages. A drug is considered to be a member of this category if it does not fit into the classification of tryptamine, phenethylamine, or opiate and opioid. In fact, all of the drugs that are listed in this category are members of other classifications of drugs. For example, the drugs GHB, GBL, and GVL all fall into the class of drugs known as GABA derivatives. The class of drugs known as benzodiazepines includes the drugs commonly known as Valium (diazepam), Xanax (alprazolam), Klonipin (clonazepam), and others. Cocaine is also included in this category.

Diazepam
The drugs listed in this category include some of the extremely easy to synthesize, such as GHB, to the more difficult to synthesize, like cocaine. As with the drugs listed in the other categories, the difficultly of the syntheses of these drugs is mostly dependant on the availability of a direct precursor. Some drugs, such as the active chemical in Salvia Divinorum—Salvinorin A, has not, to this author’s knowledge, ever been synthesized through the method of total synthesis. Some of the other drugs in this category, such as cocaine, have very elegant and somewhat difficult total syntheses.

While not as popular, for the most part, as the syntheses of the drugs in the other categories, the synthesis of the drugs in this category are an important addition to the serious clandestine chemist’s repertoire; these pages include various syntheses and extraction methods for a variety of common, as well as mostly unknown, drugs for a wide range of categories with a wide range of effects. As always, make sure to familiarize yourself with the applicable laws and the corresponding penalties associated with the synthesis of these drugs before attempting to perform any of the methods described.
